EXPERIENCE

2001-Present   Professor of Art Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, IA.

  • Tenured in 2008. Responsibilities include: Instruction and experimentation with traditional materials such as, clay and associated clay techniques such as kiln construction, glazing, throwing, and hand-building. Sculpture techniques include modeling, mold making, and casting. Techniques in areas of metalworking include TIG welding, MIG welding, ARC welding, oxy-Acetylene welding, plasma cutting, and metal-forming. Techniques in areas of woodworking include fabrication, joinery, bending, turning, finishing, construction, and carving. Other techniques include polyester resin, epoxy resin, foam, and plastics. Discussions, critiquing, and conceptual inquiry into the area of process/conceptual art, with a focus in critical thinking and problem-solving. Other responsibilities include committee work, advising, and the instruction of directed study and independent study students.

1997-Present    Independent Studio Artist

  • Created mixed-media sculpture and drawing that focused on how human actions and behaviors influence and alter landscapes. Exhibited work in many group exhibitions, solo exhibitions, and public and private commission projects across the country and internationally. Served as a public art consultant, guest lecturer at multiple universities and other public venues, and a judge in over twenty-five art competitions.

  • Award given to a faculty or staff member for their contributions to the betterment of the university.

2014    McCorkle Fellowship: Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

  • McCorkle Fellowship program, which was established through the generosity of the late Drs. Paul and Vivian McCorkle, Class of 1959, who were both Life Trustees of BVU, to provide selected faculty members with an opportunity for international travel to enhance their scholarly knowledge and to add international dimensions to the curriculum. Five Buena Vista University faculty members visited Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, as part of the McCorkle Fellowship program. During the 12-day trip, the Fellows visited various destinations and landmarks across the island's 63 square, gaining international perspectives and broadening their field of knowledge in their academic specialties.

2012    New Century Faculty Development Award for Research or Creative Work

  • The award recognizes full-time Storm Lake campus faculty for a single item of research or creative work published or exhibited during the previous calendar year (between January 2013 and December 2013 for the 13-14 academic year award). This award was for a solo exhibition “Torre’ Objective” at the Ylvisaker Fine Arts   Center in Mankato, Minnesota.
